Did you shun love through forgetfulness, or through feigned forgetting?

And did you waste your life deliberately, or were you heedless?

By your life, nature, the soul, and youth

have a claim upon you; so be faithful in fulfilling it.

Are you not the gentlest of people by nature, and do you see

anyone of tender disposition who does not share the cup?

Your youth—the devotions of dalliance are a duty

upon it; what folly, then, to cast off dalliance!

So share the cups of revelry with the moons of its horizon,

and be a sipper of conviviality's wine, O friend.

Do you not see your branch of youth putting forth leaves,

and love's turtledove calling to you from above it,

and that the gazelles of al-Khal, around you in succession,

come to drink at the pools of union, if you offer them drink?

So renew—may my soul be your ransom—the festivals of youthful longing,

and ascend above the sanctuary of delights.

And embrace the figures of graceful beauties in every pleasure-ground,

and kiss cheeks—you will reap your wishes.

For no helpless man will pluck the blossoms of delight,

nor will one who is unfeeling sip pleasures.

And hasten, for life is a racecourse of pleasure,

and youth's horses gallop within it.

For no good lies in a young man's living and his life,

if he does not treat beautiful women tenderly in love.

Long have I loosened, in love's racecourse,

the reins of the soul's steed, openly and in secret.

And how many a lush, fresh garden of revelry,

where graceful beauties were blossoms I used to gather!

So there was no gazelle but I was her hunter,

nor any fawn but I was his guardian.

And I have remained love's intimate, apart from its devotees,

for months and years now passed and gone.

So say to him who has turned apostate from revelry,

and now journeys through the night of ostentation:

Be arrogant, grow in conceit, and be confident

in your acts of obedience, through which you were disobedient.

But as for the sons of letters, God is a refuge

for them, rather than acts of obedience that are sins.
