Are you one who listens to reproachers,

O heart, or are you deaf and valiant?

Indeed, in the eyes of the lords of passion, reproachers are

sinks of vice—nay, baser and lower still.

Did you despair over the beloved when he showed coldness?

Do not despair, for the beloved has his coy reserve.

If one day he lends his ear to slanderers,

then be patient; your patience is more useful against calamities.

    For perhaps he will awaken from slumber for you;

how often has a sleeper awakened to fidelity!

Ardent love decrees that the lot of one it lays low

in love is to bow humbly to the beloved and submit.

O you for whom I cast off the bridle of my piety, distraught

in love for him, and defied whoever would restrain me:

will you ever come to renew our bond,

O my lifeblood? Through you I plead before you.

You are the beloved; my heart has no desire,

all life long, to become enamored of anyone but you.

And even if time strikes me with distance from you

and I come to graze in the meadow of estrangement,

still I owe you the safeguarding of the covenant

in which fidelity's full moon shines resplendent.

By your worth, since I have been away from you, unceasingly

this heart of mine has been tearing itself apart over you.

So the night passes in longings and sorrow,

and through all my day's brightness I ache.

Passion for you has possessed my very soul; neither

the reproacher's rebuke nor blame avails.

I have torn the veils of my forced patience without you,

yet my patience with you remains gathered and whole.

I truly marvel how, after parting from you,

my soul still enjoys the company of its body.

Or how can I trust the turns of a time that betrayed me

in nearness to you—or how can I place hope in it?

Time is indeed unjust to lovers,

and against the noble its onslaught is more dreadful.

I recited, when I wished to satirize it,

a verse uttered by the illustrious imam:

May ugliness befall your face, O Time, for it is

a face veiled with every kind of baseness.
