جعلتكI made you نصرتيmy support فيin كلّevery شدَّةhardship
وبعدand after اللهGod فيin الضيقاتtimes of distress عُمدَهa mainstay
I made you my support in every hardship,
I made you my aid in every hardship,
And, after God, my mainstay in distress.
After God, in trials you were my pillar.
ورُمتُكَand I sought you ليfor me مدىthroughout الأيَّامthe days حسبيenough for me
وقلتand I said كفانيsufficed for me هذاthis الخلّthe dear friend وحدهhe alone
And I wished you to suffice for me throughout the days,
I aimed at you throughout my days as enough for me,
And said, “This dear friend alone is enough for me.”
And said this friendship alone suffices me.
وكنتand I was أظنّI think انthat تبقىyou remain زماناًfor a time
وانand that تعطيgrant لناto us الأيَّامُthe days مُدَّهa span of time
And I used to think you would remain a while,
I thought you would remain for some time,
And that the days would grant us time.
And that days would grant us an extension.
وماand not خلتُI thought الفراقparting يكفwithholds عنيfrom me
لقاكَmeeting you وارضيand my land فيماin what لنwill not أَودَّهI desire it
And I never thought parting would deprive me
But parting would not stop tormenting me,
Of seeing you and my homeland, against my wishes,
I met you, pleased with what I do not want extended.
ويرمينيand casts me غريباًa stranger فيin بلادٍlands
أَرىI see فيهاin them يوميmy day الفa thousand شدَّهhardship
And cast me, a stranger, into lands
And it casts me a stranger in lands,
Where I see a thousand hardships each day.
Where my days see a thousand hardships.
