Why this heedlessness, O Abd al-Ilah, when

You are now on the verge of life's end?

You seek shelter and go forth, while the days wander on,

And life runs out, while the decrees belong to destiny.

And you do not know whether this striving wins approval

Or not; thus you are in the gravest peril.

Why did you not take heed from one whose company you once kept,

Who then parted from you, like those who settled in graves?

And you found his dwelling empty and abandoned,

Bereft of him, while people on a journey lodged there.

What hope have you in the world, when it has lifted

Its veil for you and laid bare the hand of lessons,

And made you swallow cups of its hardships,

Yet did not grant you the success you had hoped for?

Whenever clarity appears to you, murkiness taints it,

Bitter to the taste—so look with the utmost discernment.

And never incline, even for a day, toward ease

In it; leave it, and be on your guard against it.

And take from it such provision as suffices you, and do not

Heap upon the heart the dread of worry and sleeplessness.

And if you keep vigil, do not keep your eyelids awake for

Wealth you acquire, nor strive after a legacy.

And set your striving right, making it for our Creator

Alone; you will find it on the Day of Gathering and Resurrection.

And lessen your effort in what you say,

And, with that, confine it to the need at hand.

For silence is finer than speech you utter,

Except in remembrance of the God of the sun and moon.

And remember your God throughout the hours, striving earnestly,

And utter nothing but remembrance and Qur'anic chapters.

And be mindful of God in whatever you seek,

So you may fare best in coming to the watering-place and leaving it.

And if you seek, do not seek to amass like one

Whose worldly life made him forget the terror of the arduous standing for judgment.

And restrain the soul from what is unlawful, and be

Vigilant and fearful of that news.

Alas, my soul! What do you seek, when

You have learned with certainty what is in the books and scriptures?

Have you not read God's Book, reflecting on

What the text has brought of rulings and warnings?

O soul, what excuse have I when they demand

Proofs from me on the Day of Decision—what excuse have I?

And what answer is there if I have not made the most of a lifetime

By striving in righteous deeds and cheerfulness?

Fulfill what God has made obligatory to perform,

And patiently refrain from seeking pleasures; persevere.

And do not betray a covenant that you once pledged to

Your Maker in the bygone days of your troubled life.

Then blessings upon the Chosen One, our master,

Muhammad the Elect, sent forth from Mudar.
