Leave off this youthful dalliance: youthful desire is not approved.

And cease your teasing; tint your face or brighten it.

You seek my love through submission and gentleness,

and hope I will fulfill your wish; I will not.

Yet I do not despise a radiant young beauty,

nourished by the freshness of soft, tender youth.

She steals hearts when she draws near, enchants when she withdraws:

a bough when she approaches, a sand dune when she walks away.

Except that I have a faith that restrains my impulses

from error; so veil yourself at the flirt's rebuff, or lower your gaze.

It is forbidden to me to yield to youthful desire,

even if what has already shown of your tender body shines forth.

    فلست بخيلاً بالهبات وبالقرض

    But ask whatever you wish, as a loan or a gift;

I am not miserly with gifts and loans.

    تزيدان في الأموال والجاه والعرض

    Generosity and beneficence are nothing but a trade;

they both increase wealth, standing, and honor.

The miser thinks prudence lies in clenching his hand

around his wealth; but prudence lies in extending it, not clenching it.

    I find that when I am openhanded, the earth grows spacious;

but if I grow tightfisted, the expanses of the earth close in on me.

My clan boasts of my standing when I am generous,

and suffers the harm of my miserliness when my flesh is assailed.

    وبالجود لاقتني الأباعد بالخفض

    Through generosity, my relatives greet me with approval;

through generosity, strangers greet me with gentleness.

Such are people: if some people did not bear burdens

for others, none would surpass another.

I have always overlooked my cousin's faults, so my condition

and his remain good, though he does not overlook mine.

And I maintain my kinship ties when he severs his bond,

so he may find contentment instead of rancor and be restrained from hatred.

And if I do not safeguard my neighbor with every protection

by which I safeguard my honor, then I have no honor.

And unless I help a brother when he is in need

of me, my death will not make him weep or waste away.

    And I cannot be—if I fail to honor a friend's due,

when he is out of my sight—either sincere or purehearted.

My brother, what—since kinship has not drawn

your ties closer through kindness—has shielded you from my bite?

If you do not ward off blame and harm from me,

then what little bond there is with your cousin meets rejection.

You kicked with the foot of hatred, then bit me

with the fang of treachery, biting and kicking to the utmost.

    What offense, or what sin,

did I commit against you, for you to take up hatred of me?

I devoted myself to you, and my soul is generous

in this toward you, seeking the favor of Him who angers and pleases.

And, by the Possessor of blessings, I hoped among you

for closeness amid sweetness and pure milk.

But my reward was that every calamity

that befell me became a fang of yours biting into my flesh.

    If this pleased you, I endured out of nobility;

and by God, this neither gladdens nor satisfies.

And if, without intending any disparagement,

your words are generous, what has passed shall pass.

Peace be upon you; I do not seek to disparage you

in any way, though you are eager to make me fall.

I have lampooned no person of piety anywhere on earth,

to the furthest bounds of Islam, in length and breadth.

May God reward Muhammad on my behalf with the gardens of Paradise,

scion of Hamid, son of Balj, pleasing and well-approved.

For he is the sincere one, pure in his belief,

and he guards the sanctuary of the recommended and the obligatory.

He deemed his aid in the cause of truth a duty; so drew near

his horsemen, at the hour of aid and exhortation.

And I close my words with blessings upon the one

whose is the praised station in the arena of Judgment.
