Indeed, from far beyond my land and homelands there came to me

a hope of aiding the faith, from my brothers,

and word of an imam whose renown spread among the people,

and sweet was the praise of him: al-Khalil ibn Shadhan.

So I crossed lowlands and traversed seas,

toward them, drawing along glory from the house of Qahtan.

And in many a land I left behind elders,

noble and illustrious, hoping for my coming.

And I do not see myself turning back from what I sought,

nor aspiring except toward an arduous goal.

And how many were the elders—our elders—who,

when they sought aid, were reinforced with helpers!

And many an imam among them dwelt in Mecca,

while his helpers were in China or Khurasan.

By God, had the faith not been driven back,

humbling my face before people would not have been my way.

But I have humbled my face before people, hoping

for noble, discerning brothers to extend my authority,

through sound counsel from them and a band

honored, drawn from people of faith and knowledge.

So do not turn me away with coldness, O Haddad,

and O Hasan: I am a brother close to you both.

And I do not think my rightful claim is hidden from you both,

even if it escapes a bewildered dullard among men.

How, then, could my conduct be hidden from the discerning,

and signs of proof be demanded of one like me,

that I call for a cause which is loved

and recognized by a person among a thousand people?

Answer the call of a caller staying here—may you both be guided—

he calls to you both, calling to the truth in anguished longing.

Lift sorrow from me, lift it, for I

spend the night enduring the heat of anguish and grief.

So fares the seeker of his needs, until he attains them:

neither life nor drink is pleasant for him.

Favor me with counsel, and grant me advice,

for your counsel is to me like foot soldiers and horsemen.

And tighten the belt of counsel in what you both advise

me, for I am neither dull-witted nor slack.

Even if I returned from it with nothing but seeing you both,

your counsel has strengthened my resolve and my pillars.

And it is enough for you both that the imam—may he live long—

wishes you both to provide a path to my joy.

So ends this; may God, my Lord, bless the one

through whom He made Islam manifest at all times.
