If you are enamored of this lowly world,

then tell me: who is looked to and counted on for the hereafter?

And if you strive toward every noble thing,

why do you not strive for the better—the hereafter?

You [withhold] knowledge that you ought rather to share,

yet give what the wealthy have spared you the need to give.

And you leave the market of knowledge stagnant among the people,

and its seekers like captives in the darkness of ignorance.

So rise and establish a market for knowledge, unfurling

a banner through which the Lord of heaven has entrusted you with a charge.

And indeed, by God's life, it is the greatest proof

against you, if ever you seek an excuse on the Day of Recompense.

So take advice from me, O namesake of the Pure One:

it is truly sincere in private, and sincere in public.
