By my life, O Badr, or by your life,

Do not say 'no'—how ugly 'no' is in your speech!

Rise with us; let us win union, and my soul

is for love's sake and for your pleasure.

Rise, for nothing but a doubt's becoming certainty

is among my traits—and yours—among humankind.

Ah, may souls ransom you—why this delay?

Do you not see that merriment has grown scarce in your days?

Bring it at daybreak, for the delight of wine

comes before midmorning and before your prayer.

Then lull us to sleep; let us take a little midday rest,

when the tawny wine bends your spear's wooden shaft.

Then return to drinking—may my soul ransom you.

And give it to me to drink, and drink with me, by your life.

Indeed, all of life is a cup passed round,

and a drinking companion, and a fawn among your cupbearers.

So seize time's opportunity, for it has been said:

Pleasure's brother is the bold, reckless man.

Do not ever postpone a morning of joy

until evening; outstrip it before your own passing.

This life is but like a dream,

a night visitor you savor in your slumber.
