Ah, would I knew—though hopes are distant—

How fare your inhabitants, O Najd?

And how is Da‘d, after our days together?

Does Da‘d alone among women remain ours?

Has she broken any of our covenant in love

After parting, or does her pledge still stand?

No wonder separation has changed her,

For distance may well have changed you.

How wondrous, O Najd, the gazelles whom

Affection bound to us within you!

Where pure love was our servant,

Sparing no effort, and wishes were our slaves.

And your spacious abode was our paradise,

If only everlasting life had endured there!

And herbage was abundant, grazed in sanctuary,

And the water, never muddied, was plentiful.

Amid the whirl of revelry, in youth's first bloom,

We went through life at evening as at dawn.

May rain salute that time when

The ease of our life passed by.

Days when I roamed, with Hajir's oryx,

A mantle of union with them enfolding me,

Neither wary of a spying eye, nor thinking

That rejection might follow our union.

Among young men like stars in the darkness,

As though they had been strung into a necklace,

Each a gazelle of slender stature,

Matched neither by the moringa nor the laurel.

Joyous, his haunches well-watered, his waist athirst,

Blended perfume wafts between the two.

His neck outdoes the gazelle of the wastes,

And his cheek outshines the full moon in the sky.

Ah, for that time gone by,

And a thousand sighs for you, O Najd!

And for a dwelling whose fabric was worn thin

By dust-bearing winds charging and rushing through it.

    فارتدَّ وهو الرَّيطة الجرد

    I remember it as a mantle, fresh in its warp;

Now it has become a threadbare sheet.

The hand of rainstorms effaced its signs,

Except remnants of lines still showing.

Its form obscured what had been legible,

If distance had altered the mind before it,

Till both confounded my knowledge of it,

    As hollows replaced its hills.

I halted my pale camels there, in tears,

    Saying: Alas! Accursed be distance!

Has it come to this, after nights gone by—

So few—already to such an extreme?

Grant that your inhabitants have fled

From you—where, then, are the lowlands and uplands?

Nothing remains but a ruin standing stark,

Like a tattoo, most of it effaced by laurel.
