أتتني مع الصنع الجميل على وعدِ

أتتني مع الصنع الجميل على وعدِ

Under an auspicious omen and a fortunate ascendant,

With auspicious omens and happy fortunes

It came to me with gracious kindness, as promised.

You came to me, with exquisite kindness as promised

وأحييت يا يحيى بها نفس مغرم

وأحييت يا يحيى بها نفس مغرم

يجيل جيادَ الدمع في ملعب السعدِ

يجيل جيادَ الدمع في ملعب السعدِ

And with it, O Yahya, you revived a lover's soul,

And I was revived, O Yahya, by her

Who sends the steeds of tears circling in the arena of good fortune.

My soul that pines, forgetting my devotion and friendship

نسيتُ وما أنسى وفائي وخلتي

نسيتُ وما أنسى وفائي وخلتي

وأقفر ربع القلب إلاّ من الوجد

وأقفر ربع القلب إلاّ من الوجد

I was forgotten, yet I do not forget my loyalty and friendship;

Though I forget not, and left vacant a quarter of my heart

And the heart's dwelling grew desolate, save for longing.

Save what was filled with passion and longing

وما الطلُّ في ثغرٍ من الزهر باسم

وما الطلُّ في ثغرٍ من الزهر باسم

بأزكى وأصفى من ثنائي ومن وُدِّي

بأزكى وأصفى من ثنائي ومن وُدِّي

Nor is the dew in a blossom's smiling mouth

No glance at a flower's lip could surpass

Purer or clearer than my praise and my affection.

The purity and sincerity of my praise and affection

فأصدقتها من بحر فكري جواهراً

فأصدقتها من بحر فكري جواهراً

تنظّم من در الدراريّ في عقدِ

تنظّم من در الدراريّ في عقدِ

So I gave it a dowry of jewels from the sea of my thought,

So I drew for her from the sea of my thoughts

Strung into a necklace from the pearls of radiant stars.

وكنتُ أطيلُ القولَ إلاَّ ضرورةً

وكنتُ أطيلُ القولَ إلاَّ ضرورةً

دعتني إلى الإيجاز في سورة الحمدِ

دعتني إلى الإيجاز في سورة الحمدِ

And I used to speak at length, but necessity

And I would speak at length were it not

Called me to brevity in the chapter of praise.
