O you with the beautiful face—when it appears,

Its charms surpass the full moons in perfection—

And you, chosen from the essence of glory, who

Surpass the caliphs in might and beauty:

My eyes have never seen the like of this gift,

Which revealed to us the handiwork of God Most High.

In it are apples of every wondrous kind,

Whose fragrance kindles the east and north winds.

It offers us the beloved's breast and cheek,

And shows us a likeness of freshly picked roses.

And in it is a sun of citron that has revealed

From each half a crescent to the eyes.

And pleasing foliage surrounds it, as though it were

Gold leaf; and arrows have indeed been finely fashioned

    رقَّتْ وراقَتْ بهجةً وجمالا

    By evening's hue, which gilded its surfaces;

They grew delicate and lovely in splendor and beauty.

And among its delicious sweetmeats is a reminder

Of a time gone by—would that it could continue!

God be praised for its greenery, from a court

That enriches supplicants and amply fulfills hopes.

You reminded me of the old days and a familiar haunt

Where the suns of wine once glittered.

So I wished to renew those days, and yet

Gray hair wrote 'No, no' upon my sideburns.

So from remembrance of you I passed round a cup of wine,

And from my love for it I drank red wine.

So may you remain a sun in the sky of caliphal rule,

Whose setting time cannot bring about.
