لقد زادني وجداً وأغرى بيَ الجوى

لقد زادني وجداً وأغرى بيَ الجوى

ذُبالٌ بأذيال الظلام قد الْتفَّا

ذُبالٌ بأذيال الظلام قد الْتفَّا

Indeed it has heightened my longing and incited love's anguish against me—

My passion increased, and the rays drew me on,

a wick wrapped in the trailing skirts of darkness.

A gleam amid the skirts of darkness fluttered away.

تشير وراء الليل منه بنانَةٌ

تشير وراء الليل منه بنانَةٌ

مخضّبةٌ والليل قد حجب الكفَّا

مخضّبةٌ والليل قد حجب الكفَّا

From behind the night, its fingertip gestures,

It waved its hand behind the night,

henna-stained, while the night has concealed the hand.

Dipped in henna, though the night concealed it closely.

تلوح سناناً حين لا تنفح الصَّبا

تلوح سناناً حين لا تنفح الصَّبا

وتبدي سواراً حين تَثْني له العطفا

وتبدي سواراً حين تَثْني له العطفا

It gleams like a spearpoint when the east wind does not blow,

It shone white when the breeze did not blow,

and reveals a bracelet when that wind turns its flank toward it.

And showed an armlet when it crooked its elbow.

قطعت به ليلاً يطارحني الجوى

قطعت به ليلاً يطارحني الجوى

فآونَةً يبدو وآونةٌ يخفَى

فآونَةً يبدو وآونةٌ يخفَى

I passed a night with it, while it shared love's anguish with me;

It sliced through a night that played tricks on me,

at times it would appear, and at times disappear.

Appearing for an instant then hiding away.

إذا قلتُ لا يبدو أشالَ لسانَه

إذا قلتُ لا يبدو أشالَ لسانَه

وإن قُلْتُ لا يخفى الضياءُ به كَفَّا

وإن قُلْتُ لا يخفى الضياءُ به كَفَّا

When I said, 'It will not appear,' it raised its tongue;

If I say it does not appear, its tongue rebels,

and if I said, 'It will not vanish,' its radiance died away.

And if I say it does not hide, the light denies me.

إلى أن أفاقَ الصبحُ من غمرة الدُّجى

إلى أن أفاقَ الصبحُ من غمرة الدُّجى

وأهدى نسيمُ الرّوض من طيبه عَرْفَا

وأهدى نسيمُ الرّوض من طيبه عَرْفَا

Until dawn awoke from the depths of darkness,

Until dawn awoke from the depth of gloom,

and the garden breeze offered a waft of its fragrance.

And the scent of flowers wafted gently from the garden.

لك اللهُ يا مصباحُ أَشْبَهْتَ مهجتي

لك اللهُ يا مصباحُ أَشْبَهْتَ مهجتي

وقد شَفَّها من لوعةِ الحبِّ ما شفَّا

وقد شَفَّها من لوعةِ الحبِّ ما شفَّا

God be with you, O lamp! You resemble my heart,

God reward you, O lamp; you have revived my anguished soul,

which the burning anguish of love has worn so thin.

And cured it of the agony of love.
