  1. تأمّل أطلال الهوى فَتألَّما

    وسيما الجوى والسقم منها تعلَّما

    He contemplated love’s ruins and suffered,

    And from them learned the signs of heartache and sickness—

  2. أخو زفرة هاجتْ له نارَ ذكرةٍ

    فأنجدَ في شِعبِ الغرام وأتهما

    A man whose sigh stirred for him the fire of remembrance,

    So through passion’s ravine he journeyed to Najd and Tihama.
