كتب الإله على العباد محبةً

لك كان فرض كتابها موقوتا

لك كان فرض كتابها موقوتا

God ordained upon His servants my love—

God enjoined upon His servants a love

for you; the duty of inscribing it was fixed for its appointed time.

For you; its written obligation was set for an appointed time.

وأنا الذي شرفته من بينهم

وأنا الذي شرفته من بينهم

حتى جعلت له المحبَّةَ قوتا

حتى جعلت له المحبَّةَ قوتا

And I am the one whom you honored from among them,

And I am the one you honored among them,

until you made love his sustenance.

ما زلت تُتحفُهُ بكلِّ ذخيرة

ما زلت تُتحفُهُ بكلِّ ذخيرة

حتى لقد أَتحفته الياقوتا

حتى لقد أَتحفته الياقوتا

You have never ceased presenting him with every treasure,

You have never ceased presenting him with every treasure,

until you even bestowed the ruby upon him.

Until, indeed, you presented him with the ruby.

وإلى الملوك قد اعتزى من عزةِ

وإلى الملوك قد اعتزى من عزةِ

فغدا له ياقوتها ممقوتا

فغدا له ياقوتها ممقوتا

And he has claimed kinship with kings, by virtue of his high standing;

And out of pride he claimed ties to kings,

so the kings’ rubies have become hateful to him.

So their ruby became hateful to him.
