God be with you, peerless and unique in majesty,

whom hopes obey in prohibition and command.

Yours is the loftiest pen, whose glory towers

above keen white blades and dusky spears.

You hang amulets around the necks of pages,

with two kinds of pearls, in verse and in prose.

The parchment was awed by you and blushed as it came

to bear oceans from your ten fingertips.

As though the gardens of the page were a rosy cheek,

embroidered by the tracery of cheek-down in ink.

Thus this kingship's insignia are lovely in their adornment,

with red banners and red pages.

For no luxuriant garden, faithfully tended by rain,

where rain's hand weaves the brocade of spring,

where the birds' songstresses sing in its reaches,

and the bān branch dances in green robes,

where it stretches fingers toward the cups of ʿarār flowers,

made of tender irises ringed with gold,

where its river's keen sword guards the rose's cheek,

and the blossom's mouth is defended by a fresh, slender spear,

whose appearance vies with heaven in beauty,

and whose flower-stars put the shining stars to shame,

when the east wind's palm strokes its blossoms' eyelid,

and the flowers' mouth breathes out the ambergris of al-Shihr,

is more fragrant than the scent of praise for you on night journeys,

or more dazzlingly beautiful than your radiant virtues.

I marvel at him, who mirrors the nature of a leafy grove,

yet lions fear him in the place of terror.

When war harbors a blazing fire from its fury,

from it the keen sword blazes in the sea's depths.

And if champions scowl in the thick of battle,

the water of gladness shimmers on the full moon's face.

Yours are illustrious ancestral honor and lordly eminence

that description's compass is too narrow to encompass.

    فغرناطةٌ تختال تيهاً على مصرِ

    A horizon is ennobled, with you as its perfect full moon;

thus Granada struts in pride above Egypt.

The crown of kingship has been wreathed in your virtues,

and through you the Banu Nasr have vied proudly with kings,

with the resolve of a peerless man assured of good fortune,

and the brow of one radiant in noble deeds and lineage.

Aided, with banner unfurled, he folded up injustice,

so Islam's protected realm grew mighty through folding and unfurling.

And he extended the shades of safety as he restrained the foes,

so kingship's splendor is recited with lengthening and shortening.

When the hall is thronged on a day of counsel,

and opinions clash among all men of reason,

you speak out with surpassing eloquence, unchallenged,

and bring forth ideas kindled from the dawn.

So if the raiding horses win at midmorning,

it is through your auspicious counsel that they win gold.

May you never cease to guard high glory's honor,

and trail glory's hems over the Eagle.

    And for learning and the smiting of foes, there is Fakhr al-Din;

through him, O Ibn al-Khatib, you have risen proudly above glory.

So may the one whose feast you are greet you at Eid al-Fitr,

and praise the radiant blessings you have bestowed.

You mended my broken wing and feathered it,

and smoothed for me the rugged side of time.

And you settled me on a lofty seat at the summit of honor,

and honored me in ways I know and do not know.

And you gave me hopes to drink, sweet and smoothly flowing,

and exalted my renown and raised my standing.

So my lifetime is a feast of joy and hopes,

and all life's nights are for me the Night of Decree.

Thus I became envied for a most excellent blessing,

for whose least part abundant thanks are too little.
