طللانِtwo ruins طالَhas grown long عليهماover them both الأمَدُthe span of time
دثراthey both decayed فلاso no علمٌlandmark ولاnor نضَدُstacked furnishings
Two ruins over which long ages have passed,
Their separation was prolonged
Both lie effaced: no landmark, no furnishings remain.
Withered, with no knowledge or resolve
لبِسَاthey both donned البِلَىdecay فكأنّماso it is as though وَجَداthey both felt
بعدَafter الأحبّةِthe loved ones مثلَthe like of ماwhat أجِدُI feel
They have donned decay, as though they felt,
Wearing out, as if they had found
After the loved ones left, just what I feel.
After their loved ones, what I endure
حُيِّيتُماmay you both be greeted طللينِtwo ruins حالُهماtheir state
بعدَafter الأحبّةِthe loved ones غيرَother than ماwhat عَهِدواthey once knew
Hail, you two ruins, whose state
I greeted two separated lovers
After the loved ones left is not what they once knew.
After their loved ones, not what they were accustomed to
إماif طواكَhas folded you away سُلُوُّforgetfulness غانيةٍa fair woman
فهواكَthen love for you لاno مَللٌweariness ولاnor فَنَدُfolly
If a fair woman's forgetting has folded you away,
Whether your companion is a melodious singer
Then love for you knows neither weariness nor folly.
Or your love has no boredom or separation
إنif كنتِyou are صادقةَsincere in الهوىlove فرِدِيthen come to drink
فيin الحبِlove منهليَmy watering place الذيwhich أرِدُI come to drink at
If you are true in love, then come
If you are truthful in love, then quench
To my watering place in love, where I drink.
For me in love the spring I seek
أدميis it my blood هَرَقتِyou shed وأنتِwhile you آمنةٌsafe
أمor ليسِthere is not ليfor me عقلٌblood-money ولاnor قَوَدُretaliation in kind
Have you shed my blood while you remain safe,
My tears flowed while you are safe
Or have I neither blood-money nor retribution?
Or have I no mind or firewood
إنif كنتِyou have فُتّeluded me وَخاننيand has failed me سَبَبٌa means
فلربّماfor often لمdid not يَحظَsucceed مُجتَهشدُprobably a striver
If you have eluded me and my means have failed,
If you are a temptress and a cause has betrayed me
For many a striver has failed to win.
Then perhaps the afflicted will not be fortunate

فيin المجدglory حيثُwhere تَبَحبَحَdwelt at ease العَدَدُthe multitude
O best of those who trace their lineage to nobility,
O best lineage of a generous man
In glory, where the multitude dwells at ease:
In glory, where throngs bustle
فيin كلّevery أنلُةٍprobably a fingertip لراحتِهِof his palm
نَوءٌa rainstorm يَسُحُّpours abundantly وعارضٌand a raincloud حَشِدُdensely massed
In every fingertip of his hand
In every soft sands for his rest
Is a pouring rainstorm and a densely massed cloud.
A groan sweeps, and a witness piles up
واذاand when القَنَاthe spears رَعَفَتbled أسنّتُهtheir spearheads
علَقاًthick blood وصُمُّand the solid ones كعوبِهاof their shaft-joints قِصَدُbroken fragments
And when the spears' points bleed
And when the slim spears trembled
Thick blood, and their solid joints lie shattered,
Clinging, silent at their tips aiming
فكأنَّthen it is as though ضَوءَthe light جبينهِof his brow قَمَرٌa moon
وكأنّهand he is like فيin صَولةٍan onslaught أسَدُa lion
Then the radiance of his brow seems a moon,
As if the light of his brow is the moon
And in an onslaught he is like a lion.
And as if he in assault is a lion
وكأنَّهُand he is like رَوحٌa spirit تُدَبِّرُناgovern us

And he is like a spirit: we are governed
And as if he is a spirit that leads us
By his movements, and we are like a body.
His movements, and as if we are a body
