شمسُthe sun of الضحىthe morning وأبوand Abu اسحقIshaq والقَمَرُand the moon
Three make the world shine with their splendor:
the morning sun, Abu Ishaq, and the moon.
فالشمسُfor the sun تحِكيهِresembles him فيin الأشراقِradiance طالعةًrising
اذاwhen تَقَطّعَfalls short عنof إدراكِهاencompassing it النَظَرُsight
For the rising sun mirrors him in radiance,
when sight fails to encompass it.
والبدرُand the full moon يحكيهِresembles him فيin الظّلماءِthe darkness مُنبَلِجاًshining forth
اذاwhen استنارتgrew bright لياليهِits nights بهby it الغُرَرُradiant
The full moon mirrors him, shining forth in darkness,
when its radiant nights are illumined by it.
يحكيmirrors أفاعيلَهhis deeds فيin كلّevery نائبةٍcalamity
الغيثُthe rain والليثُand the lion والصمصامةُand the keen sword الذَكَرُhard-tempered
His deeds in every calamity are mirrored by
the rain, the lion, and the hard-tempered sword.
فالغيثُfor the rain يحكِنimitates (apparent typo) ندىbounty كفيهِhis two hands مُنهمراًpouring down
اذاwhen استهَلَpours forth بصوبِwith the downpour of الديمةِthe steady shower المَطَرُthe rain
For rain mirrors the bounty of his two hands, pouring down,
when rain bursts forth in a steady downpour.
وربماand sometimes صالَcharged أحياناًat times علىin حَنَقٍrage
شبيهَlike صولتِهِhis charge الضرغامةُthe lion الهَصِرُprey-crushing
And sometimes, in rage, there charges
the prey-crushing lion, with a charge like his.
والهُندُوانُّيand the Indian sword يحكيmirrors منamong عَزائِمهhis firm resolves
صَريمَةَdecisiveness of الرأيِjudgment منهfrom it النَقضُundoing والمَررُand binding fast
And the Indian sword reflects, among his firm resolves,
his decisive judgment, from which come undoing and binding fast.
وكُلُّهاand each of them مُشبِهresembling شيئاsomething علىin حدةisolation
وقدthough indeed تخالفَdiffered فيهin it الفعلُaction والصُورُand forms
Each of them resembles him in one aspect alone,
though action and outward forms differ in each.
وأنتand you جامعُuniting ماwhat فيهنَّis in them منof حَسَنٍexcellence
فقدfor indeed تكامَلَhas reached perfection فيكin you النفعُbenefit والضرَرُand harm
And you unite all the excellence they possess;
for in you benefit and harm have reached perfection.
فالحلقُso the throat (probably intended: so creation) جسمٌa body لهit has راسٌa head يُدَبِّرهُgoverning it
وأنتand you جارِحَتاهُits two organs السمعُhearing والبَصَرُand sight
So creation is a body with a head that governs it,
and you are its two faculties: hearing and sight.
