and streaming tears bear witness to your love.

    إن الجفونَ نواطقٌ فُصُحُ

    They have revealed the secrets entrusted to your heart;

    indeed, the eyelids speak eloquently.

And when the eyes speak, despite

their muteness, the secret is exposed.

Sometimes I spend the night embraced by a moon,

in whom the signs of beauty are clear.

    Beauty spread over his charms

marvels, and joy banished his care.

He struts in the robes of youth, filled with

mirth; your malady is that he is merry.

    His lips kept kissing me,

while the ewer and cup gave me draught after draught,

    until night reclaimed its robe,

and brightness arose amid its blackness.

And dawn appeared, as though its bright brow were

the caliph’s face when he is praised.

The world has displayed its charms through you,

and praises have adorned themselves with your qualities.

And it is as though whatever is hidden from you has

a form appearing before your gaze.

And if you are safe, every calamity is

a trifle: no misery and no sorrow.
