And reckless youth submitted to it.

Fleetingly, as a cross-eyed man looks,

    Divided between the beloved’s face

And the watcher’s eye, to see when he grows heedless.

Amid separation’s distant estrangements, I denounce

To you the forgetting of love; I do not forget.

And they said: “Your patience at parting,

When its hardship is decreed, is more becoming.”

Grant requital for blood the eyes have shed,

By the flash of a naturally kohl-dark eye that wears no kohl.

For every arrow of yours is deadly to me,

And every place they strike is a fatal spot.

    Peace upon the altered dwelling,

Even though the dwelling begrudges speech.

With resolve, never shrinking from Time.

He pressed eastward toward a western land,

And when Mosul came into view before him,

He settled where the shrewd cannot be swayed,

Nor the quick-witted, resourceful man won over,

Beside a king greeted by auspicious stars,

And shunned by the setting stars.

His days wield Time’s mighty blows,

And his bounty is there when no refuge remains.

Malik bore you aloft to dazzling glories,

And the loftiest station made you peerless.

Nor is it far-fetched that they should follow

    Their lions’ paths—the lion cubs.
