O sleep, return to eyelids that have long stayed awake.

O sleep, return to my eyelids after long wakefulness

For he who awakens my longing has grown tender toward me and taken pity.

For the waker of my passion caused me grief and lamented

عانقته وهلال الأفق مطّلع

عانقته وهلال الأفق مطّلع

فبات من كمدي حيران مكترثا

فبات من كمدي حيران مكترثا

I embraced him while the crescent was rising on the horizon.

I embraced him while the crescent moon rose on the horizon

So he spent the night bewildered, troubled by my grief.

So he spent the night confused and worried about my embrace

أنار لحظي طريقاً فوق عارضه

أنار لحظي طريقاً فوق عارضه

وكان هاروت في أثنائه نفثا

وكان هاروت في أثنائه نفثا

My gaze lit a path upon his cheek.

He illuminated a path above his cheek

And Hārūt had breathed a spell among its folds.

And Pleiades was amidst it, blowing

وكان للحسن سرّ فيه مكتتم

وكان للحسن سرّ فيه مكتتم

وشى به ناظري من طول ما بحثا

وشى به ناظري من طول ما بحثا

And beauty had a secret hidden in him.

And beauty had a secret in it, concealed

My eye disclosed it after a long search:

My glances hinted at it after long searching

لام يدلّ على بلبال مبصره

لام يدلّ على بلبال مبصره

ما زال يبعث وجدي كل ما انبعثا

ما زال يبعث وجدي كل ما انبعثا

A lām, pointing to the turmoil of its beholder.

Do not blame the one who saw the nightingale with his insight

It never ceased stirring my longing whenever it stirred.

He still awakens my passion whenever he is roused

من آل مُذْحِجَ لي شخص كَلِفْتُ به

من آل مُذْحِجَ لي شخص كَلِفْتُ به

لم ينقص العهد من ودّي ولا نكثا

لم ينقص العهد من ودّي ولا نكثا

I have someone of the house of Mudhḥij whom I adore.

From the tribe of Mudhaj came a person whom I was intimate with

Time has neither diminished my affection nor unraveled it.

My love for him did not diminish nor break a promise
