رب فرن رأيته يتلظى

رب فرن رأيته يتلظى

وربيع مخالطي وعقيدي

وربيع مخالطي وعقيدي

Many an oven have I seen blazing,

Many an oven I have seen blazing,

with al-Rabīʿī, my close companion and sworn ally.

With Rabīʿ, my companion and sworn friend.

قال شبهه قلت صدر حسود

قال شبهه قلت صدر حسود

خالطته مكارم المحسود

خالطته مكارم المحسود

He said, “What is it like?” I said, “An envious man’s breast,

He said, “Liken it.” I said, “An envious man's breast,

when the virtues of the envied mingle within it.”

Pervaded by the noble qualities of the man he envies.”
