يعزُّis painful علىto العلياءِeminence أنيَthat I خاملٌobscure
وإنand even if أبصرتit has seen منِّيin me خمودَthe fading شهابِof a shooting star
It pains eminence that I remain obscure,
It grieves the noble that I am dormant,
even if it has seen a shooting star fade within me.
Though you may see the dying down of a meteor in me,
وحيثُand where يُرَىis seen زَندُthe firestick النجابةِof excellence وارياًsparking
فثمَّthen there يُرَىis seen زَندُthe firestick السعادةِof fortune كابيgone cold
And where excellence's firestick is seen sparking,
Where the sparkle of luck is seen to be fleeting,
there fortune's firestick is seen gone cold.
There too the sparkle of fortune is seen to fade.
وإنيand indeed I لفيsurely in دهرٍan age فرائسُthe prey أسدِهِof its lions
سدًىneglected عبثتhave played wantonly فيهin it نيوبُthe fangs كلابof dogs
Indeed, I live in an age whose lions' prey
In an age whose lions make prey of me,
lies neglected, while dogs' fangs have played wantonly there.
In vain snarled at by packs of curs.
أتخفىare they hidden? علىfrom الأيامِthe days غُرُّthe shining مناقبيof my virtues
وقدand already بذَّsurpassed شأويmy reach شأوَthe reach كلَّof every نَقَابِdiscerning man
Can my shining virtues be hidden from the days,
Are the heights of my distinction hid from the days?
when my reach has surpassed the reach of every discerning man?
When my renown vies with the fame of each starry one.
ويركبنيand rides me رسمُthe mark الخمولِof obscurity وقدand already غدتhave become
خصالُthe virtues العلاof eminence والمجدِand glory طوعَobedient to ركابيmy mounts
And the mark of obscurity rides me, though now
The guise of torpor rides me, and yet
the virtues of eminence and glory obey my mounts.
The traits of eminence and glory bow to my stirrups.
سأرقىI shall ascend بهمَّاتيthrough my aspirations قُصَارَىto the utmost مراتبيof my ranks
وإنand even if كانis أدناهاthe lowest of them يُطيلُprolongs طلابيmy quest
Through my aspirations I shall ascend to the highest of my ranks,
With my determination I shall attain the utmost summit,
even if the lowest of them prolongs my quest.
Though the lowest rung tests my patience.
لتعلمَso that they may know أطرافُthe tips الأسنَّةِof the spearheads أننيthat I
كفيلٌa guarantor بهاfor them عندat الصداthirst بشرابof a drink
So that the spearheads' tips may know that I
Let the chatterboxes learn that I
guarantee them a drink when thirst comes,
Can curb them at the assembly with drink.
وتشهدَand may testify أطرافُthe tips اليراعاتِof the reed pens أننيthat I
بهنَّwith them مصيبٌattaining فَصلَthe decisive point كلِّof every خطابdiscourse
and the reed pens' tips may testify that I
And let the far-flung lands witness that I
with them reach the decisive point of every discourse.
Conquer them with words that end all dispute.
وليسand is not نديميmy boon companion غيرَother than أبيضَgleaming صارمٍa sharp sword
وليسand is not سميريmy companion by night غيرَother than شخصِthe form كتابof a book
My boon companion is none but a gleaming, sharp sword,
My only companion is a bare white blade,
and my companion by night is none but the form of a book.
My only confidant is a book.
مضمّحةٌanointed لاnot بالخلوقِwith saffron perfume أنامليmy fingertips
مزعفرةٌsaffron-stained لاnot بالعبيرwith perfume حرابيmy lances
My fingertips are anointed—not with saffron perfume;
Not adorned are my fingers with trinkets,
my lances are saffron-stained—not with perfume;
Not perfumed are my robes with ambergris,
ولكنand yet بنفحٍwith a fragrant waft يُخجِلُputs to shame الروضَthe garden زاهراًin bloom
ولكنand yet بدعسٍwith thrusts فيinto كُلىًkidneys ورقابand necks
but with a fragrant waft that shames the garden in bloom,
But with a scent that shames the blooming garden,
but with thrusts into kidneys and necks.
And with a tread that splits skulls and napes.
ومنand whoever لمdoes not يخضِّبdye رُمحَهُhis spear فيamong عداتهhis foes
تساوتis equal بهto him فيin الحيّthe tribe ذاتُa woman with خضابhenna dye
And whoever does not dye his spear among his foes,
Whoever has not dyed his spear in the foe
a henna-adorned woman is his equal in the tribe.
Is no better in life than a woman in make-up.
ومنand whoever لمdoes not يُحَلّadorn السيفَthe sword منfrom بُهَمِthe champions العداof the foes

And whoever does not adorn his sword with the blood of the enemy's champions,
Whoever has not drawn the sword from the sheath of purpose
adorns himself in life with shame and disgrace.
Adorns himself with shame in life and is shamed.
إذاwhen ورقُthe leaves الفولاذof steel هُزَّare shaken تساقطتfall
ثمارُfruits حتوفٍof death أوor ثمارُfruits رغابof coveted rewards
When the leaves of steel are shaken, down fall
When the steel leaves rattle, down tumble
fruits of death, or fruits of coveted rewards.
The fruits of resolve, or fruits of desire.
ومنand whoever يتَّخذtakes غيرَanything other than الحسامِthe keen sword مخالباًas claws
فماthen is nothing هوhe إلاَّbut واردٌone coming for water بسرابat a mirage
And whoever takes anything but the keen sword as claws,
Whoever takes other than the sword for his talons
is only one who comes for water at a mirage.
Is chasing a mirage.
ومنand whoever غرَّهُbeguiled him منfrom ذاthis الأنامhumankind تبسُّمٌa smile
فبالعقلthen in intellect قدindeed أضحىhas become أحقَّmost deserving مصابan afflicted person
And whoever is beguiled by a smile from these people
Whoever is beguiled by the smiles of people
has become the one most rightly deemed afflicted in mind.
Has lost his reason, and that is his greatest loss.
