Are you not, O company of kings, a people

    whose immortality these songs decree?

So if you stint some people of your bounty,

then the poets are owed an increase from you.

    فإنّما نحن تحميدٌ وتمجيد

    For you we were created, and not for ourselves;

for we are nothing but praise and glorification.

O possessor of glory, glory is a grazing beast

that strays unless it is tethered by poetry.

Demand of me whatever radiant, far-ranging poem you wish,

to which the deaf man listens, stricken at heart.

And excuse the shortcomings [uncertain reading] of one who forever

trots and strides swiftly in livelihood's rear guard.

He cannot obtain sustenance from what you bestow

until the officials' harassment has dragged on.

And poetry has nothing but a wakeful mind,

stirred by the ease and support you provide.

And panegyrics are nothing without kings—and does

anything but the upper chest and neck reveal the necklace's radiance?
