O you who possess fair form, character, and reason, and who

    encompass knowledge in every field,

do not grieve for a homeland

where you are wronged and humiliated.

It suffices: Taha and every humble devotee are example enough.

How often they have emigrated from a town!

    And leave the dwelling where

the lowlands are raised above strife.

And be wholly pious, and sit beside every pious person.

And beware of encountering any wicked man.

And flee to a virtuous man's shelter,

even if it is the bosom of Ḥaḍan.

Indeed, a freeborn, noble young man accepts no vile deed.

And humiliation is for the base, ignoble man.

    And hold yourself above dwelling

    where filth covers you.

And if your country's waywardness spreads and overflows, and its oppression

increases, your duty is to journey beyond it.

And traverse the lands: whichever of them

pleases you, choose as a homeland.

And strive as others have striven, and leave all people behind.

And swiftly make the most of your time.

    And abandon thoughts of familiar—

    —haunts, and longing for home.

How many a faithful man we have seen in his own land, effaced and obscure,

and his worries do not disappear.

And know that the freeborn man, in

    his homelands, suffers injustice.

And make peace of mind your foundation; look and see how many a scholar lies buried

in his own country, disgraced and debased,

like pearls in shells, held in contempt

    and undervalued in price.
