O you who abandon the schools, this is not good.

Do not abandon gatherings of goodness; blessings dwell in them.

مجالس الخير فيها كل فضل ومن

مجالس الخير فيها كل فضل ومن

مجالس الخير تدفع للفتن والمحن

مجالس الخير تدفع للفتن والمحن

Gatherings of goodness contain every excellence and bounty.

Gatherings of goodness ward off trials and tribulations.

مجالس العلم تحوي الخير في كل فن

مجالس العلم تحوي الخير في كل فن

طوبى لعبد جعلها ماله والسكن

طوبى لعبد جعلها ماله والسكن

Gatherings of knowledge hold goodness in every discipline.

Blessed is a servant who makes them his wealth and dwelling.

مجالس العلم نذهب بالكدر والدرن

مجالس العلم نذهب بالكدر والدرن

بهابها يصلح الظاهر وما قد بطن

بهابها يصلح الظاهر وما قد بطن

At gatherings of knowledge, we dispel murk and grime.

Through them, through them, the outward and what lies hidden are set right.

ذا الحق صدقا يقينا ليس حدسا وظن

ذا الحق صدقا يقينا ليس حدسا وظن

كم جات آيات معروفه لأهل الفطن

كم جات آيات معروفه لأهل الفطن

This is the truth, truly and surely—not guesswork or conjecture.

How many verses have come, well known to people of discernment!

وكم أحاديث مرويه لجد الحسن

وكم أحاديث مرويه لجد الحسن

شى في البخاري وفي مسلم وشى في السنن

شى في البخاري وفي مسلم وشى في السنن

And how many traditions are narrated from al-Hasan’s grandfather!

Some in al-Bukhari and in Muslim, and some in the Sunan collections.

حضور مجلس علم خير من ألف أن

حضور مجلس علم خير من ألف أن

تعودهم أو تشيعهم وإن تركعن

تعودهم أو تشيعهم وإن تركعن

Attending a gathering of knowledge is better than a thousand instances of

Visiting them when sick or accompanying them to burial—even if you bow in prayer.

والعلم فرض على المسلم طلبه ومن

والعلم فرض على المسلم طلبه ومن

سلك طريقا إليه فهو فأنزولن

سلك طريقا إليه فهو فأنزولن

And seeking knowledge is a duty for the Muslim; and whoever

Takes a path toward it is [likely: successful, and will not]

يضيعه الله والجنات نعم الوطن

يضيعه الله والجنات نعم الوطن

مأواه فاعلم وعلم واعملن واخلصن

مأواه فاعلم وعلم واعملن واخلصن

Be forsaken by God; and the gardens—what a fine homeland!—

Are his refuge. So learn, teach, act, and be sincere.

وزاحم أهل الفضائل بالركب واقربن

وزاحم أهل الفضائل بالركب واقربن

ولا تضيع فقد ضيعت كم من زمن

ولا تضيع فقد ضيعت كم من زمن

And press close, knee to knee, among people of virtue, and draw near.

And do not waste time—you have already wasted so much.

تغانم العمر من قبل الحنط والظعن

تغانم العمر من قبل الحنط والظعن

وصل ربي وسلم كلما رعد حن

وصل ربي وسلم كلما رعد حن

Make the most of life before funeral anointing and departure.

And send blessings and peace, my Lord, whenever thunder moans,

على رسولك أبي القاسم مجلى الفتن

على رسولك أبي القاسم مجلى الفتن

والآل والصحب والتابع لهم في الرسن

والآل والصحب والتابع لهم في الرسن

Upon Your Messenger, Abu al-Qasim, dispeller of strife,

And his family, his companions, and whoever follows them, keeping to the rein.
