Muhammad, if you wish to join the ranks of men,

Take a place for yourself far apart from people.

And be an ally of piety in every circumstance,

In heart and deed and upright speech.

And guard your hearing, your eye, and your speech,

And all your limbs; beware of straying.

For its benefit is of no avail amid its harm.

For in them both are solace and a life of ease.

Strive for knowledge and act upon it; you will attain

The pleasure of God, who gives still more.

And remember your God if you desire perfection,

For remembrance of God is every worthy person's aim.

And remembrance of God is a polish for the heart,

And everyone who remembers keeps company with the Praiseworthy.

Hold fast to it, O seeker of union.

Keep to remembrance; you will be given what you desire.

The secret and the essential matter lie in emptying the mind

Of all but your Master, Lord of the Throne, the Glorious.

    فاترك جميع الشواغل يا سعيد

    And whatever distracts from God is a bane;

So abandon all distractions, O fortunate one.

And be much occupied with your Lord,

And do not pin your concerns on His servants.

Whatever God decrees, whether bitter or sweet,

Be content with it; there is a threat against rejecting it.

And remember your death and long-lasting terrors,

And take provisions for them; you will be called rightly guided.

Their Ghazāl; so listen, O seeker of benefit.

    تشكر وتحمد متى تلحد وحيد

    So follow it, and abandon hearsay and gossip;

You will give thanks and praise when you are buried alone.

For whatever you wish, be it trivial or hard to attain.

Say: O Hearer of prayer, O Lord of bounty,

O You who bestow whenever a seeker comes to You,

Grant us a good ending at our departure,

And stand by us when we are buried in the earth.

And forgive our many, heavy sins—

All of them, whether old or new.

Say: 'No reckoning for you, no questioning,'

By Your sheer grace, O Originator and Restorer.

    فاستر كما سترت الآن زيد

    For our condition, if You exposed it, would be the worst of conditions;

So veil us as You have veiled us; now grant still more.

Upon the chosen Prophet, the best of servants,

And his Companions and family, possessors of lofty virtues,

As long as a chanter stirs the heart with song.
