بانواthey departed وَأَبقواand they left behind فيin حشايmy innermost heart لبينهمbecause of their parting
بانوا وَأَبقوا في حشاي لبينهم
وَجداًlonging إِذاwhen ظعنjourneyed away الخَليطthe companions أَقاماremained
وَجداً إِذا ظعن الخَليط أَقاما
They departed and left in my heart, through their parting,
a longing that remained when the companions journeyed away.
لِلّهِto God (expressing admiration) أَيامdays السُرورjoy كَأَنَّهاas though they
لِلّهِ أَيام السُرور كَأَنَّها
كانَتwere لِسُرعةbecause of the swiftness of مرهاtheir passing أَحلاماdreams
كانَت لِسُرعة مرها أَحلاما
God bless the days of joy! It was as though
they were dreams, so swiftly did they pass.
لَوif دامَendured عَيشa happy life قبلهاbefore them لأَخيfor a devotee of الهَوىlove
لَو دامَ عَيش قبلها لأَخي الهَوى
لَأَقامَwould have remained ليwith me ذاكَthat السُرورjoy وَداماand endured
لَأَقامَ لي ذاكَ السُرور وَداما
Had a lover's happy life endured before those days,
that joy would have stayed with me and endured.
ياO عَيشَناour life المَفقودlost خُذtake مِنfrom عُمرِناour lifetime
يا عَيشَنا المَفقود خُذ مِن عُمرِنا
عاماًa year وردَّand restore مِنof الصِباyouth أَياماdays
عاماً وردَّ مِن الصِبا أَياما
O our lost life, take from our lifetime
a year, and give back days of youth.
