She passed by once and stirred my merriment;
A thought occurred to me and stirred my feelings,
And turned my winds toward youthful dalliance.
And sent my mind wandering to places far away,
لاno وَوَجهٍby a face وَمُقلَتينand two eyes وَثَغرٍand a mouth
مِثلَlike وَردٍroses وَنَرجِسٍand narcissi وَاِقاحيand daisies
No—by a face, two eyes, and a mouth
Of a face, and two eyelids, and lips
Like roses, narcissi, and daisies—
Like a rose, a narcissus, an anemone.
لاnot تَسَليتI found solace عَنfrom هَواهاlove for her وَلاand not
أَصغيتI listened فيهاconcerning her إِلىto مَقالةthe words of لاحيa reproacher
I have not let go of my love for her, nor
I found no solace from its passion
Have I heeded a reproacher’s words concerning her.
Nor heeded the words of a blamer.
