رَبmany a لَيلٍnight كَأَنَّهُas though it were أَملىmy hope فيكin you
رَب لَيلٍ كَأَنَّهُ أَملى فيك
وَقَدand indeed رُحتI departed عَنكَfrom you بِالحرمانwith deprivation
وَقَد رُحت عَنكَ بِالحرمان
Many a night seemed like my hope in you,
when I had left you empty-handed.
جبتُهُI traversed it وَالنُجومand the stars تُنعشrise فيin الاbeginning of الأفق: the horizon
جبتُهُ وَالنُجوم تُنعش في الا
فقcompletion of الأفق: the horizon وَتطرفنand they blink كَالعُيونlike the eyes الزَوانيwanton
فق وَتطرفن كَالعُيون الزَواني
I traversed it while the stars rose on the
horizon and blinked like wanton eyes,
هارِباًfleeing مِنfrom ظَلامdarkness فعلكyour conduct فيin نَحوthe direction of
هارِباً مِن ظَلام فعلك في نَحو
ضياءradiance الفَتىthe youth الأَغَرthe fair, radiant الهجانthe pure-born
ضياء الفَتى الأَغَر الهجان
fleeing the darkness of your conduct toward
the radiance of the fair, pure-born youth.
