اللَهُGod يَعلَمknows ماnot أَتيتI committed خَنىًindecency
اللَهُ يَعلَم ما أَتيت خَنىً
إَنeven if لامَنيblamed me العَذالthe reproachers أَوor سفهواacted foolishly
إَن لامَني العَذال أَو سفهوا
God knows I have committed no indecency,
Even if the reproachers blame me or act foolishly.
ماذاwhat يَعيبfind fault with الناسpeople مَنin رَجُلٍa man
ماذا يَعيب الناس مَن رَجُلٍ
خَلَصbelonged exclusively العَفافchastity مِنfrom among الأَنامmankind لَهُto him
خَلَص العَفاف مِن الأَنام لَهُ
What fault can people find in a man
To whom alone, among mankind, chastity belongs?
يَقَظاتُهُhis waking hours وَمَنامهand his sleep شَرَعalike
يَقَظاتُهُ وَمَنامه شَرَع
كُلeach بِكُلto each مِنهُof him مُشتَبهsimilar
كُل بِكُل مِنهُ مُشتَبه
His waking hours and his sleep are alike:
Each of his states resembles the other.
إِنif هَمَّthought فيin حُلمa dream بِفاحشةof an indecent act
إِن هَمَّ في حُلم بِفاحشة
زجرتهrebuked him عفتُهُhis chastity فَيَنتَبِهُso he awakens
زجرته عفتُهُ فَيَنتَبِهُ
If, in a dream, he thinks of an indecent act,
His chastity rebukes him, so he awakens.
