حط من نبل قدره

حط من نبل قدره

The illustrious emir has—may no

diminution touch his noble standing—

قهوةٌ أشبهت سجا

قهوةٌ أشبهت سجا

ياه في كل أمره

ياه في كل أمره

a wine resembling his quali-

ties in every regard,

ذات صفوٍ كوده

ذات صفوٍ كوده

ونسيمٍ كنشرهِ

ونسيمٍ كنشرهِ

clear as his affection,

and fragrant as his renown.

فشربنا بحمده

فشربنا بحمده

وانتقلنا بشكرهِ

وانتقلنا بشكرهِ

So we drank, praising him,

and ate sweetmeats, thanking him,

وسمعنا غرائباً

وسمعنا غرائباً

من أفانين شعرهِ

من أفانين شعرهِ

and heard marvels

from the varied forms of his verse,

فكأنا في الخلد نر

فكأنا في الخلد نر

تع في طيب زهره

تع في طيب زهره

as though in Paradise we were revel-

ling amid the fragrance of its blossoms.
