On the hearthstones we have pots,

On the carpets we have pots,

Their pulse is still; they do not boil.

Without a boiling pulse, still

قامت على سوقها لأكل

ونحن من حولها ندورُ

They stand upon their legs, ready for a meal,

They stand in the marketplace for food,

And we circle around them.

While we circle around them

وعندنا من شراب عمروٍ

وعندنا من شراب عمروٍ

دنٌّ رحيبُ الحشى كبيرُ

دنٌّ رحيبُ الحشى كبيرُ

And of Amr’s wine we have

And we have from the drink of Amr

A large jar, ample-bellied.

Ample, spacious is the belly, great

لما فضضناه فاح منه

نسيم مسكٍ ولاح نور

When we broke its seal, there wafted from it

When we opened it, from it emanated

A breeze of musk, and a light shone forth.

So bring us joy, and hasten;

So be fortunate for us and take the initiative

With you, beauty and joy will be complete.

واغنم من الدهر صفو يومٍ

فهو بتكديره جدير

And seize from time a day’s serenity,
