Indeed, I have been afflicted with a coquettish young gazelle,

I have suffered much with an ignorant woman,

lovely in his ways, ample of rump.

Beautiful in form, but unwise.

يبغى الدراهم وهي معوزةٌ

يبغى الدراهم وهي معوزةٌ

عندي فحبلي غير متصل

عندي فحبلي غير متصل

He seeks dirhams, but they are scarce

She seeks money while in poverty,

with me, so my cord remains unjoined.

Yet my rope to her is not intact.

مستعجم الألفاظ أجهل ما

مستعجم الألفاظ أجهل ما

يبدي ويجهل فهمه غزلي

يبدي ويجهل فهمه غزلي

His words are foreign; I do not understand what

Her words are foreign to me. I do not know

he expresses, and my love poetry eludes his understanding.

What she expresses. My love is lost on her.

وإذا مدحت فليس يفهمه

وإذا مدحت فليس يفهمه

والفارسية ليس من عملي

والفارسية ليس من عملي

And when I offer praise, he does not understand it,

And when I praise her, she does not understand,

and Persian is not among my skills.

For Farsi is not my domain.

فبحق ما بيني وبينك من

فبحق ما بيني وبينك من

ود بلا زيغ ولا ميل

ود بلا زيغ ولا ميل

So, for the sake of what lies between you and me—

So by the bond between you and I, free of

affection without swerving or turning aside—

Deviance or leaning,

امنن علي بقربه فعسى

أحيا بزورته ويسمح لي

أحيا بزورته ويسمح لي

grant me the favor of his nearness; perhaps

Grant me nearness to him, that perhaps

I may come alive through his visit, and he may be generous to me.

I may live by his sight and he may be kind to me.

الجود منك سجيةٌ أبداً

الجود منك سجيةٌ أبداً

والمدح والتقريظ من قبلي

والمدح والتقريظ من قبلي

Generosity is always your nature,

Generosity is forever your nature.

and praise and commendation come from me.

Praise and compliment are from me.
