فعلام تكثرُ حسرتي ووساوسي

Hunger is driven away by a dry loaf;

Hunger is dispelled by the stale loaf

So why do my sorrow and anxieties grow?

So why do I multiply my regrets and worries?

والموت أنصف حين عدل قسمةً

والموت أنصف حين عدل قسمةً

بين الخليفة والفقير البائس

بين الخليفة والفقير البائس

And death dealt justly when it made an equal division

Death was most just when it made equal

Between the caliph and the wretched pauper.

The share of the caliph and the wretched poor.
