That evening he asked about my condition, seeking to learn it,
And how I was faring that evening among my family, in my homeland.

فقلتso I said حاليmy condition بحالٍin a state منowing to رثائتهاits wretchedness
فقلت حالي بحالٍ من رثائتها
وعلةand the illness of الحالone's circumstances تنسيmakes one forget علةthe illness of الجسدِthe body
وعلة الحال تنسي علة الجسدِ
So I said: My condition, taken in itself, is one of its marvels;
I said: my condition is in such a wretched state,
The affliction of one’s circumstances makes one forget the affliction of the body.
And the illness of one's circumstances makes one forget bodily illness.
