لقد أمسكت من عمر بن يحيى

بحبل لا أخاف له انبتاتا

بحبل لا أخاف له انبتاتا

From Umar ibn Yahya I have indeed grasped

I have held fast to the rope of Imr'ul Qays,

A cord whose severing I do not fear.

A rope I do not fear will snap.

حباني في الحياة ورم حالي

حباني في الحياة ورم حالي

وأوصى بي أبا حسنٍ وماتا

وأوصى بي أبا حسنٍ وماتا

He favored me in life and set my affairs aright,

He loved me in life and exalted my state,

And entrusted me to Abu Hasan, and died.

And commended me to Abul Hasan before passing away.

فكنت مجاوراً للحبر منه

فكنت مجاوراً للحبر منه

فلما مات جاورت الفراتا

فلما مات جاورت الفراتا

So I dwelt beside the scholar sprung from him;

So I dwelled close to his ink,

Then, when he died, I dwelt beside the Euphrates.

But when he died I dwelled close to the Euphrates.
