Time’s evil eye struck the bridge, and it snapped apart.

And there the full moon of youthful dalliance appeared eclipsed.

And the sea’s eyes overflowed, turbid,

Weeping for a time when it had been clear.

From the overflow of its eyes, the channels gathered

A torrent that poured forth, and watered what had dried in the earth.

And the ponds’ bellies have filled with this,

And they patiently conceal the matter, though it is already known.

How fortunate they are! They endured this and sought God’s reward.

They remain still, making no complaint of grief.

And their eye now brims with tears of sorrow,

However much they call to it: “O my eye, stop—enough!”

And the sycamore palm grew lonely for a group

Who used to find comfort in the shade allotted them.

Its tips lean toward people, bewildered,

Yet it sees none of them turn kindly toward it.

Ah, may God bless a time that passed when it was sweet

With pleasant living for us at the bridge—a time now gone.
