And what the heart desires in love—

are there ways to reach it?

بي غزوال إذا خطر

ترك الروح في خطر

I am smitten with a gazelle who, when he saunters,

leaves the soul in danger.

بالجفا ذو سماحة

بالجفا ذو سماحة

وهو بالوصل باخل

وهو بالوصل باخل

He is generous with estrangement,

yet miserly with union.

وَجدُه بي لابث

وَجدُه بي لابث

وهو بالقلب عابث

وهو بالقلب عابث

Longing for him abides within me,

while he toys with my heart.

لشَمول بثغره

أسكرتني شمائل

أسكرتني شمائل

Through the wine within his mouth,

his charms have made me drunk.

بانكساري مُلازماً

He imposed estrangement, certain

of my breaking, unrelenting.

واصطباري على النوى

واصطباري على النوى

رفعته العوامل

رفعته العوامل

And my patience through separation—

the governing forces have lifted it away.

يا هلالاً تكمّلا

يا هلالاً تكمّلا

صار بدراً مُكمّلا

صار بدراً مُكمّلا

O crescent that has grown complete,

and become a perfect full moon,

لك قلبي من الورى

لك قلبي من الورى

مع طرفي منازل

مع طرفي منازل

for you, among mankind, my heart

and my gaze are dwelling places.

قرّح الجفن ما جرى

وكفاني الذي جرى

وكفاني الذي جرى

What flowed has made my eyelid raw,

and what has flowed suffices me:

من طليق مُسلسل

من طليق مُسلسل

وهو هامٍ وهاملُ

وهو هامٍ وهاملُ

tears unbound, yet linked in chains,

streaming and pouring down.

O gazelle, when he woos

with his glance, love poetry grows sweet to me.
