بدر المسرّة قد حوى تكميلا

بدر المسرّة قد حوى تكميلا

واللَه فضلاً بلّغ المأمولا

واللَه فضلاً بلّغ المأمولا

The full moon of joy has attained perfection.

The full moon of joy has encompassed fulfillment,

And God, in His grace, has fulfilled what was hoped for.

And God has granted favor and attained what was hoped.

والقلب أضحى بالسرور مُشَبّبا

والقلب أضحى بالسرور مُشَبّبا

لمّا تبدّى بالهنا موصولا

لمّا تبدّى بالهنا موصولا

And the heart began singing with joy,

The heart has become elated with joy,

When it appeared joined with bliss.

When it appeared adorned for us, united.

وسرت دواعي البسط تنشر طيّه

وسرت دواعي البسط تنشر طيّه

فرحاً بوقت قد سما تفضيلا

فرحاً بوقت قد سما تفضيلا

And the stirrings of delight spread, unfolding its folds,

The motives for happiness spread their folds,

Rejoicing at a time that rose high in distinction.

Rejoicing in a time that rose with preference.

في منزل تمّت أهلّةُ حُسنه

في منزل تمّت أهلّةُ حُسنه

نزل السرور به وطاب نزيلا

نزل السرور به وطاب نزيلا

In a home whose crescents of beauty grew full,

In a house whose goodness was completed,

Joy settled there, a delightful guest.

Joy descended in it and stayed as a good guest.

حيث اتّجهت به رأيت مسرّة

حيث اتّجهت به رأيت مسرّة

لم يبغ مَن قد حلّه تحويلا

لم يبغ مَن قد حلّه تحويلا

Wherever you turned there, you saw joy;

Wherever it turned I saw happiness,

Whoever settled there sought no change of abode.

None who inhabited it desired change.

فيه الأحبة بالسرور تجمّعوا

فيه الأحبة بالسرور تجمّعوا

لا زال بالهنا مشمولا

لا زال بالهنا مشمولا

There the loved ones gathered in joy;

The loved ones gathered in it with joy,

May it always be encompassed by bliss.

It did not cease to be covered in bliss.

وافوا يهنّنونا بمولود سما

وافوا يهنّنونا بمولود سما

قمر السماء وفاقه تبجيلا

قمر السماء وفاقه تبجيلا

They came to congratulate us on a newborn who rose above

They came congratulating us on a heavenly newborn,

The moon of heaven and surpassed it in honor.

The moon of the sky which surpassed veneration.

شمس المنى قمر الهنا مَن قد غدا

شمس المنى قمر الهنا مَن قد غدا

نجم الردى بظهوره مأفولا

نجم الردى بظهوره مأفولا

Sun of hopes, moon of bliss—he who has made

The sun of purpose, the moon of our bliss, who has become

The star of death set with his appearance.

A guiding star with his appearance outshone.

اللَه يحفظه ويحفظ أهله

اللَه يحفظه ويحفظ أهله

ويقرّ أعينهم بذاك طويلا

ويقرّ أعينهم بذاك طويلا

May God protect him and protect his family,

May God protect him and protect his family,

And gladden their eyes with him for a long time,

And gratify their eyes with him for a long time.

ويريهم برضاعه وفطامه

ويريهم برضاعه وفطامه

وطهوره وزواجه المأمولا

وطهوره وزواجه المأمولا

And show them, in his nursing and weaning,

And show them in his nursing and weaning,

And his circumcision and marriage, what they hope for.

His puberty and hoped-for marriage.

وحزينكم يا ناس يوم ولادتي

وحزينكم يا ناس يوم ولادتي

ما زغرط النسوان فيه قليلا

ما زغرط النسوان فيه قليلا

And as for your sorrowful fellow, O people, on the day I was born,

And your day of sorrow, O people, on my birth

Not a little did the women ululate that day.

The women did not ululate much.

وتزلّبوا وتعسّلوا تفسيره

وتزلّبوا وتعسّلوا تفسيره

أكلوا زلابية كذا عسلولا

أكلوا زلابية كذا عسلولا

And they 'zalabia-ed' and 'honeyed'—meaning:

They were sullen and suckled its interpretation,

They ate zalabia fritters, and honey too.

They ate date honey and honey too.

وسقتني أمي في رضاعي بزّها

وسقتني أمي في رضاعي بزّها

وأكلت إذ طلع السنين بليلا

وأكلت إذ طلع السنين بليلا

And my mother let me drink from her breast while I nursed.

My mother suckled me in my nursing her spite,

And I ate balila when my teeth came in.

And I ate when the years brought night.

وعرفت حين كبرت أن ابي أبي

وعرفت حين كبرت أن ابي أبي

وأنا ابن أمي بكرة وأصيلا

وأنا ابن أمي بكرة وأصيلا

And when I grew up, I learned that my father was my father.

I knew when I grew up that my father was my father,

And I am my mother's son, morning and evening.

And I am the son of my mother morning and evening.
