اطلبوا اللّوم فيهم أو دعوه

اطلبوا اللّوم فيهم أو دعوه

فقلبي في هواهم أودعوه

فقلبي في هواهم أودعوه

Seek blame on their account, or let it be;

Blame them or let them be,

For they have lodged my heart in love for them.

for my heart is lost in their love.

لقد حكموا بأسري في التّصابي

لقد حكموا بأسري في التّصابي

وسيف هواهم بي حكّموه

وسيف هواهم بي حكّموه

They have indeed sentenced me to captivity in youthful dalliance,

They have judged me in trials,

And made the sword of love for them my judge.

and ruled me with the sword of their love.

وقد أمسى مُرادهم مُرادي

وقد أمسى مُرادهم مُرادي

ولا أرضى سوى ما قد رضوه

ولا أرضى سوى ما قد رضوه

And their wish has indeed become my wish,

Their will has become my will,

And I am content only with what they have approved.

I am content with what they decide.

رأوا قلبي المُعنّى في هواهم

رأوا قلبي المُعنّى في هواهم

وقد استحلى العذاب فعذّبوه

وقد استحلى العذاب فعذّبوه

They saw my heart tormented by love for them,

They saw my devoted heart,

And it had found torment sweet, so they tormented it.

so they tested it with torment.

متى أنهى الحشا عنهم عصاني

متى أنهى الحشا عنهم عصاني

وراح يطيع ما هم أمّروه

وراح يطيع ما هم أمّروه

Whenever I bid my heart keep away from them, it disobeys me,

If only they would end my rebellion,

And goes on obeying whatever they have set in command.

and let me obey their commands.

ألا قاتل اللَه اللواحي

ألا قاتل اللَه اللواحي

ألا كم من فتى قد أوجعوه

ألا كم من فتى قد أوجعوه

Ah, may God confound the reproachers!

O how they slay the ardent lovers!

Ah, how many a young man they have hurt!

O how many youths have they pained!

وماذا ضرّهم مهما رأوا من

وماذا ضرّهم مهما رأوا من

تفاني في الهوى أن يتركوه

تفاني في الهوى أن يتركوه

And what harm would it do them, whatever they saw of

Why should it bother them, if they see

My self-consuming devotion in love, to leave it alone?

devotion to love - let them leave it be.
