    Oh, how long you gave me food to lick!

    O my mother, may God have mercy on you.

    There is no remedy—you left me

    And my family to God's forgiveness.

    How could it please you to leave me?

    You were not like this before.

    Yet you have relieved me.

    Go in God's protection.

    Do not let it trouble you, my mother.

    Death is unavoidable.

    How many a Turk and how many a non-Arab

    Died before you and did not escape it.

    You cast me among the orphans.

    Yet this is by God's command.

    Your condition has become a lesson,

    And at evening my thoughts are of you.

    الأمّات حرام بعدك

    I shall meet no other like you;

    Mothers are forbidden to me after you.

    May God have mercy on you in the morning,

    And at sunset, toward your reward.

    As long as my Lord keeps me alive,

    I shall pray for you, with praise to God.

    May God grant you gardens

    Where believing women ascend.

    أعيش لك زمان وأبقى

    Whoever left me behind has not died;

    I shall live for you a while and endure.

    I offer you some prayers,

    Such as are better for you and more lasting.

    أي وادعوا لها يا اللَه

    Help me by saying 'Amen';

    That is, also pray for her: 'O God!'
