ياO مَنyou who يزيدincreases إلىtoward لقاهmeeting him تشوّقيmy longing
ولعزّهand before his glory ذُلّيmy abasement يزيدincreases تشرّفيmy honor
O you whom I long ever more to meet,
O you whose encounter increases my yearning
And my abasement before your glory increases my honor.
And for whose dignity my humiliation increases my honor
أغرقتI drowned جفنيmy eyelid بالدموعwith tears صبابةpassionate longing
والقلبand the heart قدindeed أحرقتهI burned it بتأسُّفwith sorrow
I drowned my eyelid in tears out of passionate longing,
I have drowned my eyelids in tears like rain
And I have burned my heart with sorrow.
And burned my heart with sorrow

How often the reproacher foolishly blamed me for loving you,
How foolish the censurers blamed me about you
Hoping thereby that I would cease loving you.
Hoping with that to stop my love for you
ناديتI cried out لوif ذُقتyou had tasted الهوىlove ياO عاذليmy reproacher
ماnot لُمتyou blamed يعقوبJacob الأسىgrief فيover يوسفJoseph
I cried: Had you tasted love, O my reproacher,
I called out, if you had tasted love, O criticizer
You would not have blamed Jacob for his grief over Joseph.
Jacob would not have blamed Joseph for his sorrow
