ياO تائهwanderer فيin الأكوانthe worlds
يا تائه في الأكوان
عنof مضناهhis languishing lover فيin غفلهheedlessness
عن مضناه في غفله
O you who wander through the worlds,
O wanderer in the universes
heedless of your languishing lover.
Of his suffering in his heedlessness
حسنكyour beauty ماno لهit has ثانيan equal
حسنك ما له ثاني
منamong بديعwondrous صنعhandiwork اللَهGod
من بديع صنع اللَه
Your beauty has no equal
Your beauty has no second
among God's wondrous handiwork.
Of the wonderful making of Allah
طرفكyour glance أسهرkept awake المُعانيthe sufferer
طرفك أسهر المُعاني
حينwhen نامhe slept فيin أمانprotection اللَهGod
حين نام في أمان اللَه
Your glance kept the sufferer awake
Your glance, the most wakeful of meanings
when he slept in God's protection.
When it slept in the safety of Allah
فانظرso look للفتىat the youth العانيthe captive
فانظر للفتى العاني
وارحمand have mercy on ذُلّهhis abasement باللَهby God
وارحم ذُلّه باللَه
So look upon the captive youth,
So look upon the suffering young man
and, by God, take pity on his abasement.
And have mercy on his humiliation through Allah
ياO غصناًa bough تثنيهits swaying
يا غصناً تثنيه
كلall الناسthe people تهواهlove it
كل الناس تهواه
O bough, whose swaying
O branch that
all people adore,
All people desire it
وبدراًand a full moon تجلّيهits radiance
وبدراً تجلّيه
جلّexalted is اللَهGod مولاهits Lord
جلّ اللَه مولاه
and full moon in its radiance—
And full moon that reveals it
exalted is God, its Lord!
Allah has made his Master glorious
حسبenough for الصبّthe lovesick lover يكفيهit suffices him
حسب الصبّ يكفيه
قدindeed ذوّبتyou have melted أحشاهhis entrails
قد ذوّبت أحشاه
Enough for the lovelorn—enough for him!
According to the passion that suffices him
You have melted his entrails.
His intestines have melted
لكyours صبحdawn الجبينthe brow أضحىhas become
لك صبح الجبين أضحى
فيin ليلnight الشعرthe hair هاديa guide
في ليل الشعر هادي
The dawn of your brow has become
For you the dawn of the forehead has become
a guide in the night of your hair.
In the night of poetry a guide
سكرانdrunk قطever ماnot يصحىsobers up
سكران قط ما يصحى
مَنwhoever كانhas been فيin هواكlove for you غاديgoing forth
مَن كان في هواك غادي
Drunk, never sobering,
Never sober is the drunk one
is whoever has gone forth in love with you.
Who went crazy in your love
صبرهhis patience عنكapart from you صارhas become يُمحيis erased
صبره عنك صار يُمحي
منfrom وَجدlove's anguish لهin him باديmanifest
من وَجد له بادي
His patience without you is being erased
His patience from you has been erased
by the anguish of love manifest in him.
Who found for him a guide
قدindeed صارhe has become فيكbecause of you ياO جانيwrongdoer
قد صار فيك يا جاني
بعدafter العزّhonor فيin ذُلّهhis abasement
بعد العزّ في ذُلّه
Because of you, O wrongdoer, he has fallen,
In you, O tormentor, has become
after honor, into abasement.
