    قال ابن سودون علي

    O possessor of clear understanding,

    Ali ibn Sudun said:

    بمقلة غزّاله

    I have become infatuated with a gazelle,

    with an eye that spins;

    بخيله بالوصل

    noble in origin,

    miserly with union.

    بشكلها المحبوب

    She toys with hearts

    through her beloved form.

    She came to mend my brokenness

    with union after my estrangement.

    لها وطيب لمّي

    Then I rose, after my kissing

    of her and my sweet embrace;

    معاقد اللباس

    I stealthily untied

    the fastenings of the clothing.

    I imagined a knot of twenty

    So I said: What is this transposition?

    Why was the lesser put first?

    لأنه وَدُود

    The reply came: O dullard,

    because it is loving.

    And love is the soul's affection,

    and the whole is whoever departs.

    وكله يُحبّ

    And half of it is love,

    and all of it is loved.

    قد أوجبت تقدّمه

    So this premise

    has necessitated its precedence.

    لأنه كليل

    but it leans,

    because it is weary.

    a letter, by abjad reckoning;

    and join it to the one put first:

    you will see its name, like a banner.

    And the reverse of re-dotted taqi ('pious'),

    with its forward form, is the name of what remains.

  20. نشرت طيّ رمزي

    فانحلّ عقد لُغزي

    I have unfolded the folds of my cipher,

    so the knot of my riddle came undone.
