أتحسب أن الموت يسهو ويغفل
O heedless one, reveling thoughtlessly in amusement,
O heedless one amusing himself in vanity
Do you think that death forgets and grows heedless?
Do you think death will be forgetful and negligent?

Take heed: when death's cup comes one day,
Beware, the cup of death will come one day
then neither wealth appeases it, nor does it accept an excuse.
Neither wealth will satisfy it, nor excuses be accepted

فآمالنا جهلاً من العمر أطول
Our hopes grow long, while life is short;
Our hopes are long but life is short
so, in ignorance, our hopes extend beyond our lifespan.
Our hopes in life are longer than life itself
