I wonder: will my eye aid me against my heart

with graceful patience and helpful tears?

And will elusive sleep return to me,

which separation drives from my eyelids?

Beauty and he who embodied it are truly lost,

and his loss has brought about the mourner's loss.

And earth has now become his pillow,

and shaken hands with the surface of his inviolate cheek.

Holding him, for the torrent of my tears upon cheeks,

were eyes within eyes within eyes.

May the soul ransom him—a proud, discerning man,

    chaste, pure, generous, trustworthy.

May the All-Merciful water the grave where he has settled

with clouds of mercy at every moment.
