Hasten to a garden guarded by God's aid,

Surpassing all gardens with bananas planted there.

Free of pits—how often it has made me fall for it,

Besotted with a thwarted hope for it.

Its leaves sway proudly when they spread

Over the branches like peacocks' tails.

I have been fond of it since it came to resemble me in color,

And the reason for our union is a kind of likeness.

But this one's yellowness comes from its soundness,

And my pallor from lovesickness and bankruptcy.

Will time, I wonder, favor me—even in a dream—

With a dish of syrup and bananas dipped in it,

On a day of clear skies and cloud that passes wondrously,

Ever laughing and scowling because of those two,

While the garden's flowers drip with rain,

Weeping for joy through drowsy eyes?

My dear brother, if this happens after the appearance

Of the first offerings of hospitality, to bring us cheer,

And how welcome is every sweet that comes then,

But with no price for me to pay from my purse.
