    Hardship has vanished; cheer and joy have come calling.

    And the people, at ease after constraint, have made merry.

    And the blossoms dotted the river’s face in rapture,

    So folk might sing, their voices raised in happiness.

    والطرف مُنسرح والقلب منشرح

    So the blossoms lie strewn, and the river overflows;

    And the gaze roams freely, and the heart is gladdened.

    وطاب مُغتبق منها ومُصطبح

    And wine, amid all this, has toyed with souls;

    And sweet were both its evening draught and its morning draught.

    And many a companion who sang to the green one, though she had been slain,

    Lay slain by her at evening—and the matter is plain.

    And there, in a river of julep syrup, the bananas became

    Torn to pieces within it, scattering under goading.
