At the beloved’s name, hopes anticipated relief:

my heart would find relief in love.

And false hopes there lured me on,

leaving the living like a dead man who has passed away.

And whenever I thought union’s coolness would bring me joy,

the heat of separation kindled a blaze within my heart.

And I thought wading into love would be easy for me,

until I entered the depths of its surging sea.

I found the easiest thing in it the hardest thing

for whose attainment people have squandered their lives.

Is there, then, a path to forgetting which, if taken,

would leave the lover unafraid if he met a crooked turn along it?

And that, by my life, is something never to be hoped for.

How many hopes have failed for lovers in this torment!

Yet in the firm resolves of patience there is ample room

for a lovesick heart that has long been cramped and distressed.

    عسى تعود بما ترجوه مُبتَهجا

    So be patient, O heart, and never despair of relief;

perhaps you will return rejoicing with what you hope for.

And may time consent to reveal within its gloom,

after despair, lamps for times of joy.

For ease follows hardship, and perhaps,

after separation, you will enter through the gate of nearness,

and fragrant winds of union will blow,

so the soul will inhale fragrance from the hills of reunion.
