عجيبة جيّرت ذهني

عجيبة جيّرت ذهني

بها مَن ذا يُخبّرني

بها مَن ذا يُخبّرني

A marvel has whitewashed my mind.

Strange thoughts have occupied my mind

Who can tell me about it?

Who could enlighten me about them?

رأيت بُنَيّ وهو ابن آدم

رأيت بُنَيّ وهو ابن آدم

يقول لابنه تعال ابني

يقول لابنه تعال ابني

I saw my little son, himself a son of Adam,

I saw the son of Adam speaking to his son

saying to his son, 'Come, my son.'

"Come here my son," he said

ومركب راكب فوق ماء

ومركب راكب فوق ماء

على ظهره تُركّبني

على ظهره تُركّبني

And a boat riding upon water—

And a vehicle riding above water

you make me ride on its back.

With me mounted upon its back

فهل تَركَب وهي تُركَب

فهل تَركَب وهي تُركَب

فهل ذي مسّها جنّي

فهل ذي مسّها جنّي

So does she ride while she is ridden?

Does it ride while being ridden?

So has a jinn touched this one?

Has a jinni touched it?

بحد البحر وَحّلَها

بحد البحر وَحّلَها

هواه المنعّش المضني

هواه المنعّش المضني

At the sea's edge, she was mired by

It sails to the edge of the sea

his invigorating, exhausting passion.

Borne by a refreshing, strong wind

وما هذاك عن عشق

وما هذاك عن عشق

ولكن كي توحّلني

ولكن كي توحّلني

And that was not out of love,

This is not about love

but to mire me.

But so it can carry me

وفي شهر الصيام يا ناس

وفي شهر الصيام يا ناس

صغير صار يحاربني

صغير صار يحاربني

And in the month of fasting, O people,

And in the month of fasting, O people

a little one began to wage war on me:

A little one starts fighting me

أنا صائم وهو يأكل

أنا صائم وهو يأكل

وحقّ العيد أغبنّي

وحقّ العيد أغبنّي

I am fasting while he eats;

I am fasting and he is eating

and by the feast's sanctity, he has cheated me!
